Biochar Project in Nicaragua

At ECOM Nicaragua, we are advancing our efforts towards building a more resilient and climate-conscious coffee supply chain.

In collaboration with our clients and led on the ground by Edgardo Alpizar Vargas, our SMS Manager in Managua, we are converting farm wood residues into biochar, which is then used to enrich coffee pulp compost. This enriched compost is applied during the seedling stage in nurseries across our supply chain, supporting healthier plant growth and improving productivity.

This circular approach also replaces synthetic fertilisers, contributing to greater seedling survival rates and long-term soil health. We are also working to double production and expand the use of this enriched compost to be used more widely across our operations.
